Full Metal Jacket:
Usually abbreviated as FMJ, “full metal jacket” refers to a projectile that is a soft metal (usually lead) wrapped all around in a hard metal (usually copper). The hard metal exterior helps the round penetrate further, hold its shape while traveling at high speeds, and doesn’t foul up the barrel as much as exposed lead. FMJ rounds are the simplest and cheapest types of projectiles to manufacture and they make great practice rounds.

Depending on local laws, basic FMJ projectiles can work for some types of hunting, but because the two pieces separate from one another on impact, the wound channel(s) is not as deep and may cause the animal unnecessary pain.
